Dissemination & Impact
Supervision doesn’t end with the thesis.
Today’s doctoral students are expected not only to produce robust research, but also to share it, apply it, and demonstrate its value to wider audiences. As supervisors, we play a crucial role in helping students navigate the complex landscape of dissemination and research impact.
This means more than encouraging publications. It involves supporting students to:
- Identify relevant audiences — from academic peers to policymakers, practitioners, and the public.
- Select appropriate channels — journals, conferences, blogs, podcasts, exhibitions, or community engagement.
- Navigate ethical and authorship considerations — ensuring clarity, fairness, and visibility.
- Develop a research identity — including profiles, portfolios, and impact narratives.
- Consider broader influence — including policy change, professional practice, and public understanding.
We also reflect on our own impact as supervisors — not only through student outputs, but by contributing to institutional cultures of engagement and sector-wide dialogue.
Our TEDS workshops provide space to explore these dimensions through case studies, peer learning, and real-world scenarios. We help supervisors build confidence in guiding students toward meaningful, responsible, and contextually sensitive dissemination practices.
Impact is not an afterthought. It is part of how doctoral knowledge lives in the world.
